Emission categories (scopes)

What are emission categories?

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard divides the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated in the corporate value chain into 3 categories (scopes). Scope 1 includes all direct, self-generated emissions of a company while scope 2 refers to all emissions associated with purchased energy (e.g. electricity, district heating). Scope 3 includes a company’s indirect greenhouse gas emissions in upstream and downstream supply chains (e.g. business travel, purchased goods and services).
